Strictly speaking, the `TLS` is not a standard
`off the shelf` Hewland gearbox, but we wish to feature it as an important
option for certain new projects.
`TLS` is a concept design for a Transverse gearbox, as used in high powered
rear wheel drive cars, especially Le Mans style Sports Prototypes.
`TLS` is essentially an uncomplicated design, but therein lies the secret to
its low weight and other advantageous qualities.
Two major elements that are ingenious yet simple are:
- A main casing that has no split-line across
the differential; affording superior gearbox and suspension rigidity. (A range
of differentials is available).
- A stiff gear cluster with just two bearings
per shaft; affording a narrow gearbox width (to suit the latest diffuser rules)
and total removal of the gear cluster / selection assembly from one side
plate.
Each client has their own version of TLS, with a
bespoke casing design to include dedicated suspension mounts and engine oil
tank etc. Hence the gearbox is not available from stock. However, all or most
of the internal parts will be from stock, thus keeping the price down. An
initial design and tooling charge is usually incurred however.
Five `big-name` clients have adopted TLS already. We know of no new Sportscar
that has been built with anything else, since TLS became available last year.
